DOT Physicals Q&A

What is a DOT physical?

A DOT physical is a federally mandated medical exam for commercial vehicle drivers, designed to evaluate your physical health. This examination is essential to ensure your capacity to drive safely and handle the demands of long-distance driving. Commercial drivers are required to complete a DOT physical at least once every two years.

DOT physicals must be performed by certified medical examiners (CMEs) recognized by the FMCSA. The CMEs at Magnolia Family Medicine have extensive experience performing these evaluations.

How should I prepare for a DOT physical?

To ensure a smooth exam, come to your appointment at Magnolia Family Medicine with the necessary documentation and items, including:

  • A completed DOT medical exam form
  • A valid driver’s license and your medical certificate
  • Corrective lenses (if you need them)
  • Hearing aids (if applicable)
  • A list of all medications you’re currently taking
  • A release form for any previous heart conditions
  • Any sleep study documentation if you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea

It’s also a good idea to stay hydrated, as a urine sample is required.

What happens during a DOT physical?

Your CME will review your medical history, prior DOT exams, and current health status. The physical includes several standard tests, with a focus on identifying any health concerns that may affect your ability to drive safely.

Your DOT physical exam will include:

  • Measurements of height and weight
  • Vision test
  • Blood pressure assessment
  • Heart and lung health evaluations
  • Abdominal exam
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Hernia screening
  • Spinal assessment
  • Neurological evaluation

A drug test is also mandatory, screening for substances like marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP, amphetamines, and methamphetamines to ensure safe driving conditions.
